I just discovered Meetup.com. Great idea, which actually seems to be working. It is simply a system that facilitates that people meet likeminded folks in their local area. You can choose from many different topics, and meeting dates have already been set, and you can vote on what location you prefer. I signed up for futurists and webloggers to see what will happen. It seems that part of what makes this work is the team behind it. I.e. there are real people behind it, who pay attention to how to build up these various areas. The trick is in how to hit the ground running. Many people will not show up for something unless they're pretty confident that a bunch of other people will, and that it will be successful.

Ming- I went to the site and found it interesting. but I do have a dumb question. I considered signing up for the futurist meeting and than saw the others listed (you of course). Many of the people are from other countries so how can they physically meet in CA for a meeting?

The idea is that they'll meet in their local areas. So, the software tries to help events to happen where people live, giving them a choice of local meeting places, and showing them how many other people have signed up for that category in that area. How well that works will depend on the ratio of success to failure, I suppose. If too many people too often end up with nobody else to meet with in their area, it's no longer fun.

I joined up for bloggers in Detroit Michigan. I believe that it will have more signups when more people see the site. It's a good idea but I also feel that the subjects are easier to go astray or off the topic this way.

“Champions aren’t made in the gym. Champions are made from something they have deep iidsne of them–a desire, a dream, a vision. They have to have last-minute stamina, they have to be a little faster, they have to have the skill and the will, but the will must be stronger than the skill.”— Muhammad Ali.
