Japanese teenagers seem to be a continuing source of strange and interesting trends. Here's a page about the trendy Ganguro Girls of Tokyo. The GANGURO "look" is to have dyed blonde or brown hair, plucked eyebrows, tan skin, mini-skirt, cool shoes, "ganguro gal" are the brownskin girls, "gonguro gal" are the more deep brownskin, "Yamanba gal" is silver or white or brown hair, brown or hard-drawn face, heavy makeup or panda makeup. "Yamanba gal" include "Ganguro gal" and "Gonguro gal".

I know a 70's punk band who recently had a comeback tour in Japan, judging from the photos they got the "Gorilla guys" not the "Ganguro gals", perhaps they wore the wrong make up? Now perhaps my punk band should make a "Big in japan" comeback??? lol

They dress cute and use cute accesaries, but the style went out years ago. And, too much tanning is bad for your skin so I don't think the tanning is a very good idea. Their style is ok, but attitude isn't so good..

While I find this Japanese trend incredibly intriguing, I find nothing beautiful about these women. Their abhorrent amount of make-up and fake-tanned skin make them look less like California beauties and more like California prostitutes. Japanese women are beautiful, there's no denying that, but I find that their beauty comes from the innocent sweetness that many of them contain. I recently watched Memoirs of a Geisha, and to me, that elegant demureness that those women possessed is classicly gorgeous. So, in sum, these Ganguro girls look disgustingly trashy, and honestly, completely assinine. The amount of tanning they do will cause major skin cancer breakouts, I can guarantee that. Someone needs to inform these girls that beauty comes from elegance, not stripper-heels.

Actually, I read an article about these girls in the Anime Insider magazine. It said that one of the goals for Ganguro (or Manba, or whatever) is to not only capture the California beach girl look, but to also rebel against the ideal Japanese beauty (moonlight-pale skin, long, ebony-black hair, etc.).

But yeah, I don't really like the Ganguro style. I like the Gothic Lolitas better. I also heard that Gothic Lolita was also made to count the Kogaru/Ganguro look by looking cute, innocent, modest, elegant, and sophisticated at the same time. I think Gothic Lolita girls are cuter than Ganguro. They look like cute porcelain dolls and Alice-in-Wonderlands. =P

Okay... I'm think that it does not matter how these girls dress because, it's their choice in style. They like to dress that way. Not only for others but maybe because they're more comfortable dressing that way. Now I do agree that it will lead to a lot of skin cancer or what-not but us sitting here talking about their attire is funny. We have a site here that talks about this stuff and they probably have one too that talks about Americans, Germans, Canadians, etc... I'm not saying I like the style. But I'm not saying I hate it either. It's their decision to dress and change their body just like how any woman (or man) could go and change their bodies to what they think works well for them. I'm also not saying we can't have our own opinions on this subject. But we can simple just say whether or not we like it or not. Or that we'd do it to ourselves or not. I'm Barbadian, Capeverdian, Japanese, Canadian, and a few other things. So, talking about the Japanese in a bad or good way gets my attention. I think they're style is unique and interesting for their culture and their likes. =D Plus I absolutely love the anime series "Super GALS!" Which has Ganguro Girls in it and is plotted in Shibuya! =D

I hear that Ganguros are coming back this year. They trend is coming back and its growing fast. I think that Ganguros are cool because they have the courage to express who they are and to show meaning of their creativity. There is nothing wrong with it at all. You are right in the fact there are a great many people wishing to be another race . Wait, scratch that, there are very few people who truly want to be another RACE, many who want to be in another race's CULTURE. Who is to say you cannot desire to be part of the ganguro culture, despite being white? Ganguro if anything are accepting of others.

Also, the common term for male ganguro are center guys, originating from where you typically find ganguros in general.
