For those coming here for the Mohammed cartoon controversy, my two posts where the action is are here and here. More than 8000 people came by yesterday, and, as somebody commented, it looks a bit like WWIII, but there's also some useful dialogue going on in-between the abusive name-calling.

Wikipedia has an excellent page with lots of information, history and references on the Jyllands-Posten Muhammad cartoons controversy. Clearly being updated daily. The best place to get an overview.

Actually this entry encouraged Jeff's comment just above---which I find among the most enlightened in recent history. Assassination, surprise attack (Pearl Harbor, not Baghdad...hmmmm) and now a cartoon. Who says the march of human progress has created the Age of Disappointment? Ooops, I think maybe it was me.

Yeah, that's what we need.

Maybe this controversy isn't even silly enough. I could imagine some kind of transformative effect if suddenly the warring sides wake up and realize that it was something completely trivial and important they were arguing about. Like some cartoons. But, however ridiculous this was, it maybe wasn't trivial enough. Seems like one side is not ever going to admit to it being trivial.

So, maybe we need to come to the brink of world war for, oh, maybe the order of the flags in front of the U.N., or the colors of Google's logo. Something that will make all warring sides eventually conclude that it was silly, and that maybe they shouldn't fight.

Thank you Ming for this blog. I posted this in another area and, upon finding this area, thought it proper to repost here as well.

Political cartoons express political or social messages through caricatures of current events or well established stereotypes. Metaphors, symbols, and satire are tools of the trade.

The meer fact that a message is objectionable to someone is not shocking. That's the point of these things ... to make you think.

That this particular caricature would be considered Blasphamous to Muslims is understandable, in hindsight. (I am now a bit more educated - I couldn't have predicted that before). That this particular caricature would result in protests is understandable. That this particular caricature would result in riots, deaths, and death threats is NOT.

Sorry, that goes over the line separating church and state. It is a line I wish existed throughout the Ummah.

I was raised in Viginia [USA]. James Madison and Thomas Jefferson wrote possibly the finest works on this subject. Madison's Memorial and Remonstrance was written in opposition to a bill, introduced into the General Assembly of Virginia, to levy a general assessment for the support of teachers of religions. The assessment bill was tabled, and in its place the legislature enacted Jefferson's Bill for Religious Liberty.

Isn't it just like the have nots to blame the haves even if they have nothing whatsoever to do with the controversy! but it is no crime. There is no law in the country where the cartoon was published that forbids it. So it is not wrong to express art freely, even making up an image about Mohammed, Messenger of Allah.
But the reaction of Muslims to being incited over the publishing last Sept 2005 IS a crime. As is destruction of property, threats against life, arson. And collective judgement of mobs against countries and specificaly the country of Denmark. One cartoonist in one newspaper and the whole country is judged and condemned by frenzied Muslim mobs. You Muslims assign blame to the wrong targets and expect not to be punished for your lawlessness. Instead you think that you will do the punishing. Stupid! If ignorance is going to be rewarded, we are in the wrong world. Needed a new civilization indeed.
