Unusual news item on Yahoo: Experts Claim Official 9/11 Story is a Hoax:
A group of distinguished experts and scholars, including Robert M. Bowman, James H. Fetzer, Wayne Madsen, John McMurtry, Morgan Reynolds, and Andreas von Buelow, have concluded that senior government officials have covered up crucial facts about what really happened on 9/11.

They have joined with others in common cause as members of "Scholars for 9/11 Truth" (S9/11T), because they are convinced, based on their own research, that the administration has been deceiving the nation about critical events in New York and Washington, D.C.

These experts suggest these events may have been orchestrated by elements within the administration to manipulate Americans into supporting policies at home and abroad they would never have condoned absent "another Pearl Harbor."
Unusual not because I haven't heard all of their points before, but because it appears in a major news outlet. ...Oh, I get it, it is a press release, but still. And those guys might not be scholars in the right fields to actually make any difference. Like, the contact person, James Fetzer, is a professor in philosophy. Robert M. Bowman maybe looks a bit better. Retired Air Force Colonel, aerospace engineer, the former director of Reagan's Star Wars program. And today Archbishop of the United Catholic Church, hm, a little odd. Andreas von Bülow was German Minister of Research and Technology. An odd collection of people, but they have some prominence, so they might somehow succeed in getting somebody to listen.

And, just to remind you, there's still no reasonable official explanation for a number of the aspects of 9/11. Like these guys say:
Since the melting point of steel is about 2,700°F, the temperature of jet fuel fires does not exceed 1,800°F under optimal conditions, and UL certified the steel used to 2,000°F for six hours, the buildings cannot have collapsed due to heat from the fires.
The official explanation is that, well, some of insulation sprayed on the steel had rubbed off, and all that paper was really hot, so it somehow melted anyway. But changing the laws of physics requires a bit more than a conclusion by a committee.

4 Feb 2006 @ 15:13 by vibrani : Old story for conspiracy theorists
Remember, the jet fuel alone didn't cause fire - all the office equipment is highly flammable, as are the other things in office buildings. Think of all of the computers, the copy machines, for instance. Yes, there are many reasonable explanations for it, but people who need to find reasons to mistrust everyone and create fake holes in theories won't believe any of them or see past their own fear to the facts.

4 Feb 2006 @ 15:40 by fleer : WTC7
okay vibrani,

Then why did WTC building 7 fall down ? It wasn´t hit by any airplanes nor did debris fall upon it to explain why it collapsed.

4 Feb 2006 @ 15:49 by vibrani : As I said
no matter what I or anyone who has the facts says will change what people, who need to believe the government did this, think. The facts are easily accessible if you want them bad enough. I've been through this one for the past five years with people and not wasting another second on it "proving" anything to anybody. You can just as easily find the facts as you can the conspiracy theories. They were put into more than one film of explanations as there are many written documents about it - from the builders, too. Start with a search engine - oh amazing idea, huh? {http://www.civil.usyd.edu.au/wtc.shtml} From the civil engineers as to why the buildings collapsed.

4 Feb 2006 @ 16:33 by fleer : okay
Now for something completely different..

So where are the weapons of mass destrution (WMD)in Iraq ?

5 Feb 2006 @ 18:29 by vibrani : To Fleer
Try Syria. Saddam also buried brand new weapons in the desert but he shipped the WMD to Syria. (The enemy of my enemy is my friend, a saying and practice the Arabs very well know and employ.)

5 Feb 2006 @ 21:42 by ming : Facts
Well, I've looked at the official reports ({link:http://www.fema.gov/library/wtcstudy.shtm|here}, {link:http://www.gpoaccess.gov/911/|here}) about 9/11 and any de-bunking of the conspiracy theories that I've run into (like {link:http://www.popularmechanics.com/science/defense/1227842.html?page=6&c=y|this}). All of which just made me more skeptical, as they skipped past the hard parts really quickly, and just provided some popular soundbite conclusions, rather than the actual math.

Burning office equipment and papers don't melt steel any better than jet fuel does. The temperatures aren't right. No scientific explanation has been provided. But it is enough to distract most casual readers. "Oh, it wasn't just the jet fuel, it was all the paper", "The insulation had been knocked off, so it melted more easily". Well, maybe, but somebody should be able to provide some kind of formula that has some kind of relation to science. Like, if the steel without the insulation melts at 2200 degrees, and if burning paper can get to 2300 degrees, sure, that would be an explanation. I haven't seen anything like that. If somebody has it, please provide the link.

6 Feb 2006 @ 06:02 by Tony B. @205.152.196.33 : The Hoax might be right!
Watch the movie titled: IN PLANE SITE; very contriversial if you can somehow find it somewhere.

17 Feb 2006 @ 23:36 by none @65.95.153.48 : steel melts at 2700, but softens at 600
The steel melts are 2700, but softens at 600 degrees (F or C, I think C). Once soft, it bends under load and the structure fails.

2 Jul 2006 @ 23:47 by taranga @80.168.198.223 : WTC collapse
take a look at this for a detailed explanation
http://www.civil.usyd.edu.au/latest/aibs_2002_wtc.pdf
with some convincing graphs on the strength of steel etc.
but it doesn't cover the apparent standown of military intervention when planes leave their expected course.

31 Jul 2006 @ 17:57 by Cabito @201.198.103.94 : WTC collapse
Your are right taranga: "While the fire would not have been hot enough to melt any of the steel, the strength of the steel drops markedly with prolonged exposure to fire, while the elastic modulus of the steel reduces (stiffness drops), increasing deflections.."
The conspiracy theories (just likle the TWA Jumbo explosion) are just ego- building fantasies of people not having anything better to do.

Bush's mistaske was to attack Iraq; Iran is the REAL threat !!

14 Aug 2006 @ 14:19 by Mr T @62.72.119.251 : 9/11 was such a fake
i think the walls are closing in on GW-Bush and he will be bumped off before we get him in to court.

paper+computers burning != melting point of steel

17 Sep 2006 @ 18:25 by Thomas Ellis @68.10.73.226 : Open your eyes, people.
To all who still believe the official story, take a half-hour and go to

http://video.google.com/videoplay?docid=3249714675910247150

Two words say it all: Energy Deficit. The first law of Thermodynamics is that energy output must equal energy input. No one has yet explained how an airplane crash, a jet fuel fire, burning paper and carpets (which are not "highly flammable" but quite the opposite, by order of any fire marshall) and gravity could generate enough energy to collapse a steel-frame building and pulverize all the concrete in pyroclastic flows at near free-fall speed.
Without collateral energy (i.e. demolition charges) this could not possibly have happened, by any known law of physics.

13 Oct 2006 @ 03:56 by Bob @71.206.138.244 : liberal assholes
All you people who think that 9/11 was done by our government are fucking idiots. There are men and women dying everyday so that we can be free and this is what you do with your freedom? The freedom that people give their lives for? Fuck you all you liberal idiots you deserve to be shot. You are all a disgrace to Americans, and don't deserve to call yourselves that. If you don't like the United States then move, because it would be doing this country a huge favor. Fuck you and have a nice day you radical bastards.

1 Apr 2007 @ 20:37 by JACK @216.164.199.202 : 911...to Bob
What are the men amd women dying for...??? Or "freedom" has nothing to do with Iraq so stop your fucking "right-wing" whining and grow up.... like so many other people , would like to know the fucking truth for a chnage . If you won't to think the world is still flat then that's your business.....

2 Apr 2007 @ 21:02 by ming : Freedom
The current US government is doing nothing remotely close to ensuring freedom, as witnessed by the very long list of ways your freedoms have been limited or removed in the last few years. The United States is by now one of the least free places you can live. Neither are the soldiers in Iraq dying to protect the freedom of Americans in any remotely sensible scenario. They're dying because the people in charge thought it would an easy way to score some points, and it wasn't, so all they became responsible for was to destabilize the Middle East more than ever, and to create the biggest terrorist breeding ground ever seen. Oh, and killing a couple hundred thousand people, who didn't really have to die.

12 Apr 2007 @ 18:13 by The Truth @63.95.179.2 : Follow the money
It wasn't the government, it was the property owner. He purchased the property 6 month before 9-11. More than 1/2 the office space is those buldings were empty and he was losing alot of money month to month from lack of renting that space. Well, he walked away with 18 billion in insurance money after those buildings fell. He even won two insurance claims when it went to court, saying "since two airplanes hit, it was two separate acts of terrorism". The court agreed. Always follow the money and the truth will reveal itself.
